Welcome to the April Newsletter! We are excited to share our team’s recent achievements and upcoming initiatives. This spring, we have been busy organizing diabetes classes and providing legal assistance to newly arrived immigrants. We continue to organize vaccine clinics for COVID-19, flu, and chickenpox. We hope you will join us this spring in our efforts to continue making a positive impact!
Resources for Pre-Diabetes
This month, we focused on raising awareness about pre-diabetes, as we know it is a common concern among the Hispanic community, especially due to socioeconomic factors that may limit access to healthcare. It is crucial that we all understand what changes we can implement in our lifestyle and what resources are available to us if needed. Here are some options for free or low-cost resources that may be accessible in Utah:
- Ventanilla De Salud “Health Office” at the Mexican Consulate: A great resource to get basic health assessments and guidance on pre-diabetes.
- DPP Program through the University of Utah: This program offers counseling and support to prevent or manage type 2 diabetes.
- Diabetes Recipe Book from the University of Utah: This cookbook provides healthy recipes and specific nutritional tips for people with diabetes.
- Wellness Bus: The Wellness Bus offers health services and education in local communities, including screening tests and resources for diabetes and other chronic disease prevention.
- Free Blood Pressure Monitors at the Kearns Library: You can check blood pressure monitors for free with your library card, allowing you to monitor your cardiovascular health at home.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
This month we also want to highlight the national 23rd anniversary of sexual assault awareness. It is extremely important to support and promote efforts to prevent this type of violence. Through our legal area, we can provide assistance with specific visas for cases of sexual assault, such as the VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) visa and the U visa.
VAWA visa is for individuals who are victims of domestic violence by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse, and a U visa is intended for victims of serious crimes, such as sexual assault, who have cooperated with authorities in the investigation or prosecution of the crime.
Our legal team is here to answer any questions you may have about these types of visas and to assist you with the application process. We are committed to providing you with the support you need in this difficult situation.
Alliance Community Services (ACS) is committed to providing support and resources to our community.
To address diabetes, ACS has partnered with the University of Utah to assess and adapt the National Diabetes Prevention Program curriculum, offering classes designed to reduce pre-diabetes. Those diagnosed are referred to our prevention classes, where we seek to raise awareness and educate to encourage the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. These classes have been held in Utah County, Salt Lake County, and Davis County.
Our legal team is available to provide assistance in immigration processes such as the U visa and VAWA. We are a Department of Justice-accredited agency to represent members of the community, and all our services are low-cost.
We continually implement vaccination campaigns against Covid-19, flu, HPV, and chickenpox. We collaborate with the Salt Lake County Health Department and the Department of Human and Health Services to reach more people in the Latino community.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or need assistance. We are here to accompany you every step of the way.
Together we can build a healthier and more resilient community!

Collaboration highlight
Alliance Community Services is a reference in the Latino community, promoting initiatives with the Psychology Department of the University of Utah. Together with Dr. Katie Baucom and her team, we have launched pioneering projects such as “AdiósT2,” aimed at developing prediabetes prevention strategies in the Latino community. This partnership has enabled us to address the needs of our community, promoting inclusivity and ensuring that our voices are heard. Together, we are promoting and encouraging a healthier lifestyle among Latino adults at risk of developing type 2 prediabetes, marking a milestone in collaborations between the community and the academic sphere to promote health.
